"Let the spirits witness; for theirs is the knowledge of the future - both what it would be, and what I will! You are the Queen of the Damned, that's what you are! Your only destiny is evil, as well you know! But I shall stop you, if I must come back from the dead to do it. At the hour of your greatest menace it is I who will defeat you! It is I who will bring you down. Look well upon my face, for you will see me again!" ~ But then I saw them in the thickening gloom - the two of them, their red hair catching the hazy glow of the fire; the one holding the bloody brain in her mud-covered fingers and the other, the dripping heart. All but dead they were, their own eyes glassy, thier limbs moving as if through water. And Akasha stared forward still, her mouth open, the blood gushing from her shattered skull. Mekare lifted the brain to her mouth; Maharet put the heart in her other hand; Mekare took them both into herself. The Queen of the Damned ~ Anne Rice One of the red-haired twins who haunt the dreams of vampires in QD. The first born of the twins, she is the more powerful, brazen and outspoken of the two. She can see the physical core of the spirits and control the spirits better than her sister, maharet. As a visionary, she is planning to eat the eyes and brain of their dead mother in a cannablistic ceremony until soldiers interrupt the funeral feast and force her and Maharet to Akasha's court. Mekare then takes the lead in answering Akasha's questions about the nature of their sorcery and in threatening the queen. As punishment for not providing clear answers about the supernatural realm, Enkil and Akasha command their court steward, Khayman to rape Mekare and her sister. When they are brought to court for a second time and see that Akasha has become a vampire who desires to be a goddess, Mekare fortells that she herself will be the instrument of Akasha's downfall. In retaliation, Akasha has Mekare's tongue cut out. When Khayman makes her a vampire, she in turn gives the Dark Gift to Maharet. The twins are then forcibly separated and Mekare is set adrift on Egypt's western shore. For centuries to come Maharet searches for her sister but never finds her; cave drawings in Peru indicate that she exists, but is possibly insane. The images of what had happened to the twins appear in QD in dreams to vampires and selected mortals the world over. Mekare is their source and their confused and sporadic nature reinforces the idea that Mekare has no conscious understanding of what she is doing, but, rather, is spurred by a memory. The dreams start when Akasha awakens and begins her slaughter. Some recipients of the dreams have the chance to see through Mekare's eyes and note that she seems to be an unstoppable force moving with great momentum. She is covered with mud, as if she is the earth saving itself from the destructive plundering religious ideas have justified for centuries. Akasha's erratic movements make Mekare's progress equally unpredictable and so Maharet continues to have difficulty in locating her. Khayman believes Mekare is moving to fulfill her prophecy and she does indeed show up at the compound at the opportune moment, pushing Akasha into a glass wall that severs her head. Thinking quickly, Maharet saves Akasha's brain and heart by giving them to Mekare to consume; thus, the mad Mekare becomes the new Queen of the Damned. Mekare is then taken to a secret place so that the new life-spirit of the vampires is protected. The Vampire Companion ~ Katherine Ramsland |
